Older and retired elders can and do play an important role in helping schools provide one-on-one assistance for students. The Sun Community News reports based in Tupper Lake, Volunteer Coordinator Melissa Howard helps place AmeriCorps senior volunteers in schools through five counties. There’s a five-hour-per-week minimum commitment, but volunteers can work up to 40 hours a week, or as much as they would like.
