All Essex County volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers may soon qualify for a 10 percent property tax exemption. The purpose of the law is to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers throughout the county. There are 51 fire departments in Essex County, and none of them is paid.
