About 370,000 New Yorkers get their electricity through NYPA’s ‘preference power rates.’ That includes North Country residents in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake. The rates are tied to hydropower from dams on the Niagara and St. Lawrence rivers, the latter of which is in Massena. The Adirondack Explorer reports NYPA has put forth a new proposal to raise rates from roughly $13 dollars per Megawatt hour, to $23 dollars, over the next six years.
That’s a substantial increase, but much lower than what NYPA proposed last December, which was a hike from $13 to $33 over four years.
